1 Chronicles 11 · Grade 4
Shepherd of God's People
Read and Think
The elders of Israel came to David at Hebron. They reminded him that Yahweh had said he would be shepherd of God's people Israel. David made a covenant with them, and they anointed him king over Israel, according to Yahweh's word by Samuel.
David and all Israel went to Jerusalem. David took the stronghold of Zion, and it became David's city. Joab went up first and became chief. David grew greater and greater, for Yahweh of Armies was with him (11:9).
The rest of the chapter lists David's mighty men, who helped make him king. When David longed for water from the well of Bethlehem, three men broke through the Philistine army to bring it. David would not drink it. He said it was like the blood of men who had risked their lives, and he poured it out to Yahweh.
