1 Chronicles 10 · Grade 5
Seeking the Wrong Help
Read and Think
The Chronicler skips most of Saul's life and tells only his last battle. The Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled and fell on Mount Gilboa. The archers overtook Saul. Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together (10:6).
When the men of Israel in the valley saw it, they abandoned their cities, and the Philistines came and lived in them. The Philistines mistreated Saul's body and boasted in the house of their gods. Yet the valiant men of Jabesh Gilead took away the bodies and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
Verses 13-14 give the Chronicler's verdict. Saul died for his trespass against Yahweh, because he did not keep Yahweh's word, and because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit and did not inquire of Yahweh. So Yahweh turned the kingdom over to David. The rest of First Chronicles shows a king who seeks God.
