Why Saul Fell

Name Date

Read and Think

First Chronicles begins its story with one chapter about Saul, and it is about his end. The Philistines fought Israel on Mount Gilboa. The battle went hard against Saul. He and his three sons died there, and the men of Israel fled from their cities.

The Philistines mistreated Saul's body and put his armor in the house of their gods. But the valiant men of Jabesh Gilead rose up. They took away the bodies and buried them under the oak in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

Verses 13-14 explain the meaning. Saul died for his trespass against Yahweh. He did not keep Yahweh's word, and he asked counsel of a medium instead of asking Yahweh. Therefore Yahweh turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
