Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Each son had a family that grew and grew. One name is Nimrod, who began to be a mighty one on the earth.

Shem's family led to Abram, also called Abraham. Abraham's sons were Isaac and Ishmael. Isaac's sons were Esau and Israel. The list shows that God kept track of every family.

The Family Tree Begins

Name Date

Read and Think

First Chronicles was written to remind God's people where they came from. It opens with a family list that starts with Adam. In just four verses it moves from Adam to Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Next the chapter lists the nations that came from Noah's sons. Then it follows Shem's line to Abram, also called Abraham. It names Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael, and the families of Ishmael and of Keturah.

Last, it lists Isaac's son Esau and his family, and the kings and chiefs of Edom. The writer included many families, not only Israel. In the New Testament, Luke traces the family line of Jesus all the way back to Adam (Luke 3:38).

  2. Whose line does the chapter follow to Abraham?

  3. Who were Abraham's sons?

  4. What land did Esau's family rule?

Think About It

Every Name Counts

Name Date

Read and Think

The books of Chronicles retell Israel's history, starting with a genealogy that runs from Adam to the families who returned from exile. Chapter 1 covers the time from creation to Esau. The first verses list ten generations from Adam to Noah without any stories, only names.

The chapter then traces the descendants of Japheth, Ham, and Shem, the peoples who spread across the earth. A short note says that in the days of Peleg the earth was divided. Shem's line leads to Abram, also called Abraham, the man through whom God chose to bless the world.

Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael are both listed, and so are the sons of Keturah. Esau's family and the kings who reigned in Edom before any king reigned over Israel finish the chapter. In the New Testament, Luke 3:38 ends Jesus' family line with Adam, the son of God.

Show What You Know

  1. What time period does chapter 1 cover?

  2. What happened in the days of Peleg?

  3. Through which man's line did God choose to bless the world?

  4. When did the kings of Edom reign?

  5. In the New Testament, how does Luke 3:38 end Jesus' family line?
