1 Chronicles 1 · Grade 4

The Family Tree Begins

Name Date

Read and Think

First Chronicles was written to remind God's people where they came from. It opens with a family list that starts with Adam. In just four verses it moves from Adam to Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Next the chapter lists the nations that came from Noah's sons. Then it follows Shem's line to Abram, also called Abraham. It names Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael, and the families of Ishmael and of Keturah.

Last, it lists Isaac's son Esau and his family, and the kings and chiefs of Edom. The writer included many families, not only Israel. In the New Testament, Luke traces the family line of Jesus all the way back to Adam (Luke 3:38).

Show What You Know

  1. Where does the family list start?

  2. Whose line does the chapter follow to Abraham?

  3. Who were Abraham's sons?

  4. What land did Esau's family rule?

  5. How does Luke 3:38 connect to this chapter?

Think About It

  1. God knew every name in this long list. How does it help you to know that God knows your name?

  2. The list includes many nations, not only Israel. What does that teach about God's care for all people?

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • How could your family remember the names of people who loved God before you?
  • How can you show God's love to people from other nations?
