A Scroll and a Basket

Name Date

Read and Think

Zechariah's sixth vision is a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide. The angel explains that it is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land, for everyone who steals and everyone who swears falsely. It will enter the house of the thief and the house of him who swears falsely by God's name.

The seventh vision follows. Zechariah sees an ephah basket, a container for measuring grain. A lead cover is lifted, and a woman is sitting in it. The angel says, this is Wickedness, throws her back into the basket, and puts the lead weight on its mouth.

Two women come with wind in their wings, like the wings of a stork, and lift the basket between earth and sky. Zechariah asks where they are taking it. The angel says, to build her a house in the land of Shinar.

Wickedness Removed from the Land

Name Date

Read and Think

Zechariah's sixth vision shows a flying scroll, twenty cubits by ten cubits. The angel's explanation is clear: this is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land. Everyone who steals and everyone who swears falsely will be cut off. God will send it into the house of the thief and the house of him who swears falsely by God's name. These two sins break God's commandments about how we treat our neighbors and how we use his name.

The seventh vision pictures an ephah basket, a container used to measure grain. When its lead cover is lifted, a woman is sitting inside. The angel names her: this is Wickedness. He throws her back into the basket and seals its mouth with the heavy lead weight.

Then two women appear, with wind in their wings like the wings of a stork, and carry the basket between earth and sky. When Zechariah asks where, the angel says it is to build her a house in the land of Shinar, where she will be set in her own place. The text gives these explanations and no more. Christians believe these visions show that God judges sin and promises to remove wickedness from among his people.

  1. How does the angel explain the flying scroll?

  2. Which two kinds of commandments do these sins break?
