The Day of Small Things

Name Date

Read and Think

In his fifth vision Zechariah is woken by the angel and sees a lamp stand all of gold, with a bowl on top and seven lamps, and two olive trees beside it. He asks, what are these, my lord? The angel answers with a message rather than a list.

This is Yahweh's word to Zerubbabel: not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says Yahweh of Armies. Zerubbabel was leading the rebuilding of the temple. Any great mountain in his way would become a plain. The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house. His hands shall also finish it.

Then God asks, who despises the day of small things? The work looked small, but God was in it. When Zechariah asks again about the olive trees, the angel says, these are the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.

  2. How does Yahweh say his work will be done?

  3. What will happen to the great mountain before Zerubbabel?

Think About It

  1. God's work is done by his Spirit, not by our strength. What task feels too big for you right now?

  2. God asked, who despises the day of small things? What small thing can you do for God this week?

Who Despises the Day of Small Things?

Name Date

Read and Think

Zechariah's fifth vision begins as the angel wakens him like a man wakened out of his sleep. He sees a lamp stand all of gold with a bowl on top and seven lamps, and two olive trees, one on the right side of the bowl and one on the left. Zechariah asks, what are these, my lord? The angel replies, don't you know what these are? Then he gives a message.

This is Yahweh's word to Zerubbabel: not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says Yahweh of Armies. The rebuilding of the temple faced obstacles that seemed like a great mountain, but God says, before Zerubbabel you are a plain. The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it. The work would not depend on human strength but on God's Spirit.

God then asks, indeed, who despises the day of small things? The rebuilt temple looked modest, yet God was pleased with it. When Zechariah asks twice about the olive trees and their branches, the angel answers, these are the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth. The text does not say more about who they are, so we leave it as the angel says. Christians believe this vision teaches that God's work is done by his Spirit.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the angel answer Zechariah's first question?

  2. What does verse 6 say God's work depends on?

  3. What does God say Zerubbabel's hands will do?

  4. What does the angel say about the two olive trees?

  2. God values the day of small things. How can you be faithful in small things?
