Zechariah 4 · Grade 5
Who Despises the Day of Small Things?
Read and Think
Zechariah's fifth vision begins as the angel wakens him like a man wakened out of his sleep. He sees a lamp stand all of gold with a bowl on top and seven lamps, and two olive trees, one on the right side of the bowl and one on the left. Zechariah asks, what are these, my lord? The angel replies, don't you know what these are? Then he gives a message.
This is Yahweh's word to Zerubbabel: not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says Yahweh of Armies. The rebuilding of the temple faced obstacles that seemed like a great mountain, but God says, before Zerubbabel you are a plain. The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it. The work would not depend on human strength but on God's Spirit.
God then asks, indeed, who despises the day of small things? The rebuilt temple looked modest, yet God was pleased with it. When Zechariah asks twice about the olive trees and their branches, the angel answers, these are the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth. The text does not say more about who they are, so we leave it as the angel says. Christians believe this vision teaches that God's work is done by his Spirit.
