God Says, I Will Dwell Within You

Name Date

Read and Think

Zechariah's third vision features a man with a measuring line in his hand, going to measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and length. Before he can finish, an angel sends a message: Jerusalem will be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it. The vision pictures a city that outgrows any wall.

The text explains why walls would not be needed: for I, says Yahweh, will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her. God himself would be both protection on the outside and glory on the inside. God then calls exiles still in Babylon to come, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.

The chapter closes with a song. Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion! For behold, I come and I will dwell within you, says Yahweh. Many nations shall join themselves to Yahweh in that day, and shall be my people. Yahweh will again choose Jerusalem. Be silent, all flesh, before Yahweh; for he has roused himself from his holy habitation! Christians believe God's promise to dwell with his people reaches its fullness in Jesus, and in the New Testament, Revelation 21:3 says God will dwell with his people.
