Zechariah 13 · Grade 5

Refined as Silver Is Refined

Name Date

Read and Think

Zechariah 13 follows the mourning of chapter 12 with a promise of cleansing: in that day there will be a fountain opened to David's house and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. Those who looked to the one they pierced now receive a way to be made clean. The text says God opens it; the people do not dig it themselves.

Cleansing includes removing what defiled the land. God will cut off the names of the idols, so that they will be remembered no more, and remove false prophets and the spirit of impurity. Those who once spoke lies in God's name would be ashamed of their visions and claim to be farmers instead.

The chapter ends with the shepherd. Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me, says Yahweh of Armies. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. In the New Testament, Matthew 26:31 and Mark 14:27 record Jesus quoting this verse on the night before his death. A remnant will be brought through the fire, refined as silver is refined and tested as gold is tested. The covenant is restored. God says, they will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, it is my people; and they will say, Yahweh is my God.
