Song of Solomon 8 · Grade 5
Love That Cannot Be Quenched
Read and Think
Chapter 8 reaches the high point of the Song. The bride says, Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. In the ancient world, a seal was an engraved stamp, often worn on a cord or ring, that marked ownership and authority. She asks to be his permanently, as surely as death is final.
Next come the Song's most famous lines: Many waters can't quench love, neither can floods drown it. In Scripture, many waters often picture danger and chaos. True covenant love endures through hardship.
The thought concludes: If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned. Love is not for sale; it cannot be bought. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Paul writes that nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from God's love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39).
