My Beloved and My Friend

Read and Think

Chapter 5 includes a conversation between the bride and the daughters of Jerusalem. They ask, How is your beloved better than another beloved, you fairest among women? How is your beloved better than another beloved, that you do so adjure us? Their question gives her the chance to explain what makes him special to her.

Her answer is full of praise. She says he is the best among ten thousand, meaning that no one else could compare with him. She does not speak of him with doubt or complaint; she speaks with honor and delight.

She closes with a beautiful summary: This is my beloved, and this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem. Her husband is both her beloved and her closest friend. Scripture presents marriage as a covenant of love and lasting companionship. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Jesus says, Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).
