Song of Solomon 5 · Grade 4
This Is My Friend
Read and Think
In chapter 5, the daughters of Jerusalem ask the bride a question: How is your beloved better than another beloved, you fairest among women? They want to know what makes him special.
The bride answers with praise. She says he is the best among ten thousand. To her, no one else is like him.
She ends her answer with these words: This is my beloved, and this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem. He is her beloved. He is also her friend. God made marriage to be a friendship for life. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Jesus tells His disciples that He has called them friends (John 15:15).
