The Garden of Love

Name Date

Read and Think

In chapter 4, the groom praises his bride with pictures. He invites her, Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, with me from Lebanon. Look from the top of Amana, from the top of Senir and Hermon. These were high mountains in the north.

He calls her a garden: My sister, my bride, is a locked up garden; a locked up spring, a sealed fountain. A locked garden or sealed spring was kept for its owner alone. The picture shows the faithful love of marriage, kept only for each other.

He continues: a fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, flowing streams from Lebanon. The bride answers, Awake, north wind, and come, you south! Blow on my garden, that its spices may flow out. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly.

A Well of Living Waters

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 4 is the groom's song of praise for his bride, filled with images from nature. Midway he calls, Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, with me from Lebanon. Look from the top of Amana, from the top of Senir and Hermon, from the lions' dens, from the mountains of the leopards. He invites her away from wild places into safety with him.

Then comes the garden image: My sister, my bride, is a locked up garden; a locked up spring, a sealed fountain. In the ancient Near East, a walled garden or sealed spring was a private treasure, guarded for its owner. The image celebrates exclusive, faithful love in marriage. He adds, a fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, flowing streams from Lebanon. Living water meant fresh, running water, the most precious kind.

The bride responds, Awake, north wind, and come, you south! Blow on my garden, that its spices may flow out. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Jesus also uses the picture of living water (John 4:10). In the New Testament, Jesus offers living water to the woman at the well (John 4:10).
