Song of Solomon 3 · Grade 5
The Wedding of the King
Read and Think
Chapter 3 moves to a royal wedding procession (verses 6-11). The scene opens with a question: Who is this who comes up from the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all spices of the merchant? Pillars of smoke and costly spices signal that someone important is arriving.
The answer: Behold, it is Solomon's carriage! King Solomon made himself a carriage of the wood of Lebanon. He made its pillars of silver, its bottom of gold, its seat of purple, the middle of it being paved with love, from the daughters of Jerusalem. The best materials of the kingdom were used for this day.
The chapter climaxes with joy: Go out, you daughters of Zion, and see King Solomon, with the crown with which his mother has crowned him, in the day of his weddings, in the day of the gladness of his heart. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Revelation pictures a heavenly wedding: For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready (Revelation 19:7).
