Song of Solomon 3 · Grade 4

The Royal Procession

Name Date

Read and Think

The second half of chapter 3 describes a royal wedding procession. Who is this who comes up from the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all spices of the merchant? The people watch something wonderful approach.

Behold, it is Solomon's carriage! King Solomon made himself a carriage of the wood of Lebanon. He made its pillars of silver, its bottom of gold, its seat of purple. A king's wedding was a grand celebration.

The chapter ends with joy: Go out, you daughters of Zion, and see King Solomon, with the crown with which his mother has crowned him, in the day of his weddings, in the day of the gladness of his heart. Marriage is meant to be a day of great joy. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly.
