Song of Solomon 2 · Grade 4

Springtime of Love

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 is full of springtime pictures. The bride says, I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Then: He brought me to the banquet hall. His banner over me is love. In ancient times an army carried a banner to show whom it belonged to. Love marks the bride as belonging to her groom.

The groom invites her to come away, for behold, the winter is past. The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth. The time of the singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree ripens her green figs. The vines are in blossom.

The bride warns about danger: Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that plunder the vineyards; for our vineyards are in blossom. Little foxes picture small problems that can harm love if ignored. She says, My beloved is mine, and I am his. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly.

  2. His banner over me is love. If God's love is like a banner over you, how does that change the way you see yourself?
