Psalms 97 · Grade 4
The Foundation of His Throne
Read and Think
Psalm 97 has no title. It is another psalm that begins, Yahweh reigns! This King is pictured with storm and fire, like when God came down on Mount Sinai. Clouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. God's power is never separated from his goodness.
His lightning lights up the world. The earth sees, and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh. Before such a God, worshiping idols makes no sense. Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols.
The psalm ends with a call to those who love God. You who love Yahweh, hate evil! He preserves the souls of his saints. Then a lovely picture: Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Like seeds planted in a field, light and joy will spring up for God's people.
