Psalms 96 · Grade 4
Tell the Nations
Read and Think
Psalm 96 has no title. It is a missionary song. Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth. God's people are told to proclaim his salvation from day to day and declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
The psalm explains why. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens. The nations are invited too: Ascribe to Yahweh, you families of nations, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
The message is simple: Say among the nations, Yahweh reigns. Then all creation joins in. Let the heavens be glad, the earth rejoice, the sea roar, and the trees of the woods sing for joy. God's judgment is good news, because he will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.
