Psalms 95 · Grade 4
Don't Harden Your Heart
Read and Think
Psalm 95 has no title. It is a call to worship in two parts. The first part is joyful. Oh come, let's sing to Yahweh. Let's shout aloud to the rock of our salvation! The reason is that Yahweh is a great King. The deep places of the earth, the mountains and the sea are all his, because he made them.
The second invitation is quieter. Oh come, let's worship and bow down. Let's kneel before Yahweh, our Maker, for he is our God. We are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care. Worship includes both shouting and kneeling.
Then comes a warning. Today, oh that you would hear his voice! Don't harden your heart, as at Meribah. At Meribah the Israelites tested God by complaining for water. That generation did not enter God's rest. In the New Testament, Hebrews 3:7-11 quotes this psalm and urges believers to listen to God today.
