The King Above the Flood

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 93 has no title. It is the first of several psalms that celebrate Yahweh as King. Yahweh reigns! He is clothed with majesty! He is armed with strength. Because God reigns, the world also is established. It can't be moved.

God's rule is not new. Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting. Then the psalm pictures roaring floods. The floods have lifted up their voice. In the ancient world, the raging sea was a picture of chaos and danger.

But the floods do not have the last word. Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty. The psalm ends with God's word and God's house: Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, Yahweh, forever more.

Psalms 93 · Grade 5

Mightier Than the Breakers

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 93 has no title, and at five verses it is short but majestic. It opens a group of psalms, often called the enthronement psalms, that proclaim, Yahweh reigns! The king is dressed for his role: He is clothed with majesty! Yahweh is armed with strength. Because the King reigns, the world also is established. It can't be moved.

The psalm grounds God's rule in eternity: Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting. Then it raises a threat with rising repetition: The floods have lifted up, Yahweh, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves. The three-fold build imitates waves crashing higher and higher. In ancient poetry, the sea stood for chaos, the forces that threaten order and life.

Verse 4 answers with a greater power: Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty. The final verse moves from cosmic power to God's word and worship: Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, Yahweh, forever more. The same King who masters the chaos gives trustworthy commands and dwells in holiness.

Show What You Know

  1. What are the enthronement psalms?

  2. What does the three-fold repetition of floods imitate?

  3. What did the sea stand for in ancient poetry?

  4. How does the final verse connect power to God's word?
