A Song for the Sabbath

Name Date

Read the Story

Psalm 92 is a Psalm, a song for the Sabbath day. It is a good thing to give thanks to Yahweh. Proclaim his loving kindness in the morning, and his faithfulness every night, with the lute, the harp, and the lyre.

How great are your works, Yahweh! Your thoughts are very deep. The wicked spring up as the grass, but they will not last. But you, Yahweh, are on high forever more.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in Yahweh's house. They will still produce fruit in old age, to show that Yahweh is upright. He is my rock.

Psalms 92 · Grade 4

Planted in God's House

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 92 is a Psalm and a song for the Sabbath day. It is the only psalm whose title names a day. It says that it is a good thing to give thanks to Yahweh, to proclaim his loving kindness in the morning and his faithfulness every night. Thanks should frame the whole day, from start to finish.

The psalm compares two kinds of plants. The wicked spring up as the grass, quick to grow and quick to wither. A senseless man does not understand this. But Yahweh is on high forever more, and his enemies shall perish.

The righteous are different. They shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon, trees known for long life and strength. They are planted in Yahweh's house. They will still produce fruit in old age. Their lasting life shows that Yahweh is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

  2. How are the wicked like grass?

Fruit in Old Age

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 92 reads, A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day. It is the only psalm in the Psalter assigned to a specific day, and it fits the Sabbath theme of rest in God's works: For you, Yahweh, have made me glad through your work. I will triumph in the works of your hands. How great are your works, Yahweh! Your thoughts are very deep.

At the center of the psalm, verse 8, is a single line: But you, Yahweh, are on high forever more. Around it the psalm contrasts the wicked and the righteous. The wicked spring up as the grass and flourish briefly, but they will be destroyed forever. A senseless man doesn't know, neither does a fool understand this. Quick success can hide a short life.

The righteous are pictured as trees in a temple courtyard. They shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in Yahweh's house, rooted in worship. They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green. Their long fruitfulness is a testimony: to show that Yahweh is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
