Psalms 92 · Grade 5
Fruit in Old Age
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 92 reads, A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day. It is the only psalm in the Psalter assigned to a specific day, and it fits the Sabbath theme of rest in God's works: For you, Yahweh, have made me glad through your work. I will triumph in the works of your hands. How great are your works, Yahweh! Your thoughts are very deep.
At the center of the psalm, verse 8, is a single line: But you, Yahweh, are on high forever more. Around it the psalm contrasts the wicked and the righteous. The wicked spring up as the grass and flourish briefly, but they will be destroyed forever. A senseless man doesn't know, neither does a fool understand this. Quick success can hide a short life.
The righteous are pictured as trees in a temple courtyard. They shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in Yahweh's house, rooted in worship. They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green. Their long fruitfulness is a testimony: to show that Yahweh is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
