Psalms 91 · Grade 4

A Refuge and a Fortress

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 91 has no title, so it does not name its writer. It is a psalm of trust. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. The singer answers for himself: I will say of Yahweh, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.

The psalm uses gentle and strong pictures together. He will cover you with his feathers, like a mother bird. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart, like a city wall. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day. For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

In the New Testament, Satan quoted verses 11 and 12 to tempt Jesus to jump from the temple, and Jesus refused to test God (Matthew 4:6-7). The psalm is about trust, not testing. At the end God speaks: He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. God promises his presence in trouble, not a life with no trouble.

Psalms 91 · Grade 5

Dwelling in the Secret Place

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 91 has no title. It is one of the best-loved psalms of protection. Its opening uses four names of God: the Most High, the Almighty, Yahweh, and my God. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. The promise is for the one who dwells there, who makes God a home rather than an occasional shelter.

The images move from a bird's feathers to a fortress wall. The dangers are named in pairs: the snare of the fowler and the deadly pestilence, the terror by night and the arrow by day. A thousand may fall at your side, but it will not come near you. These are poetic pictures of God's care, not a guarantee that believers will never suffer, as the rest of the Bible shows.

In the New Testament, Satan quoted verses 11 and 12 to tempt Jesus to throw himself from the temple, and Jesus answered, You shall not test the Lord, your God (Matthew 4:7). Misusing a promise to force God's hand is not faith. The psalm ends with God's own voice: Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him.

Show What You Know

  1. What four names of God appear in the opening?

  2. Who is the promise for?

  3. Why are verses 5-7 poetic pictures and not a guarantee?

  4. How did Jesus answer Satan's use of the psalm?
