Psalms 9 · Grade 4

A High Tower for the Oppressed

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 9 says it is for the Chief Musician and that it is a Psalm by David. It also names a tune, The Death of the Son, but the text does not explain it. David begins with wholehearted praise: I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart. I will tell of all your marvelous works.

David remembers how God maintained his just cause. His enemies turned back and stumbled. God sits on the throne judging righteously, and he has rebuked the nations and blotted out the name of the wicked. But Yahweh reigns forever. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in uprightness.

Yahweh is a high tower for the oppressed, a high tower in times of trouble. Those who know his name will put their trust in him, for he has not forsaken those who seek him. The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made, but the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.

  2. How will Yahweh judge the world?

  3. Why do people who know God's name trust him?

The Hope of the Poor

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 9's title says it is for the Chief Musician and is a Psalm by David; it also names a tune, The Death of the Son, which the text does not explain. In the Hebrew, Psalms 9 and 10 together form a partial alphabet poem, and they share a concern for the afflicted. Psalm 9 opens with wholehearted thanksgiving: David will tell of all God's marvelous works.

David praises God as the righteous judge. God has maintained his just cause, sits on the throne judging righteously, and has rebuked the nations. The very memory of the enemy's cities has perished, but Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment and will judge the world in righteousness.

For the vulnerable, this is good news. Yahweh is a high tower for the oppressed, and those who know his name will put their trust in him, because he has not forsaken those who seek him. He who avenges blood remembers the afflicted. The nations are caught in the net which they hid, and the wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. The psalm ends with confidence that the needy shall not always be forgotten, and with a prayer that the nations will know they are only men.

Show What You Know

  1. How are Psalms 9 and 10 connected in the Hebrew?

  2. What has Yahweh prepared his throne for?

  3. Why do those who know God's name trust him?

  4. What does David pray the nations will know?
