The Hope of the Poor

Read and Think

Psalm 9's title says it is for the Chief Musician and is a Psalm by David; it also names a tune, The Death of the Son, which the text does not explain. In the Hebrew, Psalms 9 and 10 together form a partial alphabet poem, and they share a concern for the afflicted. Psalm 9 opens with wholehearted thanksgiving: David will tell of all God's marvelous works.

David praises God as the righteous judge. God has maintained his just cause, sits on the throne judging righteously, and has rebuked the nations. The very memory of the enemy's cities has perished, but Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment and will judge the world in righteousness.

For the vulnerable, this is good news. Yahweh is a high tower for the oppressed, and those who know his name will put their trust in him, because he has not forsaken those who seek him. He who avenges blood remembers the afflicted. The nations are caught in the net which they hid, and the wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. The psalm ends with confidence that the needy shall not always be forgotten, and with a prayer that the nations will know they are only men.
