Psalms 87 · Grade 4

Citizens of Zion

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 87 calls it a Psalm by the sons of Korah. It is short but surprising. It praises Zion, Jerusalem, as the city God loves. His foundation is in the holy mountains. Yahweh loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken about you, city of God.

Then God lists nations that were often Israel's enemies: Rahab, a poetic name many think means Egypt, and Babylon, Philistia, Tyre and Ethiopia. God says, I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me. Of each it is said, This one was born there. People from other nations will be counted as citizens of Zion.

God himself keeps the record. Yahweh will count, when he writes up the peoples, This one was born there. The psalm ends with joy: Those who sing as well as those who dance say, All my springs are in you. God is the source of every good thing.
