Psalms 85 · Grade 5

Mercy and Truth Meet Together

Name Date

Read and Think

The title says The title of Psalm 85 calls it a Psalm by the sons of Korah. It moves in three steps: memory, request and promise. First the people remember: You have restored the fortunes of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people. You have covered all their sin. Many readers connect this with the return from Babylon.

Second, they ask for renewal. Though God has acted before, the people again feel his displeasure. Won't you revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? The basis is not their merit but God's character: Show us your loving kindness, Yahweh. The past mercy becomes a reason to hope for new mercy.

Third, the singer listens for God's answer. I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, his saints; but let them not turn again to folly. Then come some of the most beautiful lines in the Psalms. Mercy and truth meet together. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. God's justice and his kindness are not enemies; in him they embrace. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.
