Strength to Strength

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 84 calls it a Psalm by the sons of Korah, on an instrument of Gath. It is a pilgrim song, sung by people traveling to Jerusalem to worship. How lovely are your dwellings, Yahweh of Armies! My soul longs, and even faints for the courts of Yahweh. The singer envies the sparrow and the swallow, who get to nest near God's altars.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on a pilgrimage. On the way they pass through the valley of Weeping, a dry and sad place, but they make it a place of springs. They go from strength to strength until they appear before God in Zion. Faith turns hard places into places of blessing.

The singer makes a choice. A day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For Yahweh God is a sun and a shield. Blessed is the man who trusts in you.

A Sun and a Shield

Name Date

Read and Think

The title says The title of Psalm 84 names the sons of Korah, a Levite family who served in the temple. It is a song of longing for God's presence. How lovely are your dwellings, Yahweh of Armies! My soul longs, and even faints for the courts of Yahweh. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even small birds, the sparrow and the swallow, have found a home near God's altars.

The middle of the psalm describes pilgrims on the road to Zion. Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on a pilgrimage. The valley of Weeping may have been a real dry valley, but its name also describes seasons of grief. Pilgrims who trust God make it a place of springs, and autumn rains cover it with blessings. They go from strength to strength.

The psalm's best-known line compares time and place. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. The reason is God's character: Yahweh God is a sun and a shield, giving light and protection. Yahweh will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.
