Don't Keep Silent

Name Date

Read the Story

The title of Psalm 83 calls it a song and a Psalm by Asaph. It begins, God, don't keep silent. Your enemies are stirred up. They plot against your cherished ones. They plot to destroy Israel as a nation, so that its name will be remembered no more.

Many nations joined together, like Edom, Moab, Ammon, Philistia and Assyria. Asaph asked God to act as he did long ago in the days of Gideon and Deborah. He left the fight to God.

Asaph prayed, Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh. He wanted them to know that you alone, whose name is Yahweh, are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalms 83 · Grade 4

When Many Come Against You

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 83 calls it a song and a Psalm by Asaph. Israel is surrounded. Ten peoples are named, from Edom and Moab to Philistia, Tyre and Assyria. They conspire with one mind and say, Let's destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more. Asaph prays, God, don't keep silent.

Asaph remembers God's past help. He asks God to do to these enemies as he did to Midian in Gideon's day, and to Sisera and Jabin in the days of Deborah. He uses strong pictures from nature: make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind, pursued by a storm. This is an imprecatory psalm, a prayer asking God to judge enemies.

Yet there is hope even here. Verse 16 asks, Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh. The goal is that they may know that you alone, whose name is Yahweh, are the Most High over all the earth. Asaph leaves the battle and the outcome to God.

Psalms 83 · Grade 5

That They May Seek Your Name

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 83 calls it a song and a Psalm by Asaph. It is the last of the Asaph psalms in this section. It is a national lament in the face of a coalition. Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, the Hagrites, Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, Tyre and Assyria have joined forces. Their goal is total: that the name of Israel may be remembered no more. Because they are attacking God's people, Asaph says, They form an alliance against you.

Asaph appeals to history. Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon. He names Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah and Zalmunna, the Midianite leaders Gideon defeated. Then he piles up images: tumbleweed, chaff before the wind, fire that burns a forest, and a storm that terrifies. These imprecatory lines hand the enemy over to God rather than calling Israel to revenge.

The prayer has a surprising aim. Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh. Even judgment is meant to lead people to God. The psalm ends with its central truth: that they may know that you alone, whose name is Yahweh, are the Most High over all the earth. The final concern is not Israel's victory but God's name being known.

Show What You Know

  1. What was the coalition's goal?

  2. Why does Asaph say the alliance is against God?

  3. What do the imprecatory lines do?

  4. What is the final concern of the psalm?
