Psalms 8 · Grade 5
The Son of Man
Read and Think
Psalm 8's title reads: For the Chief Musician; on an instrument of Gath. A Psalm by David. The psalm is framed by the same line at the beginning and end: Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Everything in between shows why God's name is majestic. In the New Testament, Jesus quotes verse 2 when children praise him in the temple (Matthew 21:16).
David considers the heavens, the work of God's fingers, the moon and the stars. The picture is striking: the vast sky is only finger-work for God. Against that backdrop David asks, What is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? The psalm answers that God made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor, echoing Genesis 1, where humans are made in God's image and given dominion.
God made man ruler over the works of his hands and put all things under his feet: sheep and cattle, animals of the field, birds, fish, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas. In the New Testament, Hebrews 2:6-9 quotes this psalm and says that we do not yet see all things subjected to man, but we see Jesus, crowned with glory and honor.
