The title of Psalm 77 calls it a Psalm by Asaph. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn't get tired. My soul refused to be comforted. Asaph could not even sleep.

He asked hard questions. Will the Lord reject us forever? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Then he made a choice. I will remember Yah's deeds. I will remember your wonders of old.

He remembered the sea. The waters saw God and were afraid. Your way was through the sea, your paths through the great waters. You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

When I Can't Sleep

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 77 calls it a Psalm by Asaph, to Jeduthun. Asaph begins in deep distress. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn't get tired. My soul refused to be comforted. He was so troubled that he could not speak and could not sleep.

Asaph asks six painful questions, such as, Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Has God forgotten to be gracious? These are honest prayers. God is not offended when we bring him our hardest questions.

The psalm turns at verse 11: I will remember Yah's deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old. Asaph thinks about the exodus. The waters saw God and were afraid, the thunder rolled, and lightning lit up the world. Your way was through the sea, and your footsteps were not known. You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Psalms 77 · Grade 5

Footsteps Not Seen

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 77 says it is a Psalm by Asaph, for the Chief Musician, to Jeduthun. It begins with a sleepless night of sorrow. Asaph's hand is stretched out in prayer all night, yet his soul refuses to be comforted. He remembers God and groans. He considers the days of old but finds no rest. He even says that God holds his eyelids open.

He then asks a series of questions that sound almost like accusations: Will the Lord reject us forever? Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Has God forgotten to be gracious? The psalm does not hurry past these questions. It gives them space, showing that faith can include doubt and grief.

At verse 10 he decides to look at God's right hand, and in verse 11 he says, I will remember Yah's deeds. His focus moves from himself to God. He recalls the exodus with thunder, lightning and a trembling earth. Your way was through the sea, your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known. God was leading even when no one could see his footprints. You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Asaph say God does to his eyelids?

  2. What do Asaph's questions show about faith?

  3. How does Asaph's focus change?

  4. What does it mean that God's footsteps were not known?
