Psalms 76 · Grade 4

God Breaks the Weapons

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 76 calls it a Psalm by Asaph, a song on stringed instruments. It celebrates God's presence in Jerusalem. In Judah, God is known. His tent is in Salem, an old name for Jerusalem, and his dwelling place is in Zion.

There God broke the flaming arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. At God's rebuke, both chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep. No army can stand when God is angry. Many readers think of times when God rescued Jerusalem from invading armies.

God's power has a purpose. God arose to judgment, to save all the afflicted ones of the earth. Even human anger will end up bringing God praise. The psalm calls people to make vows to Yahweh and keep them, and to bring gifts to the one who is to be feared.
