God speaks. When I choose the appointed time, I will judge blamelessly. He tells the proud, Don't boast! He tells the wicked, Don't lift up your horn so high.

Don't Boast

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 75 calls it a Psalm by Asaph, a song for the Chief Musician to the tune of Do Not Destroy. It opens with thanksgiving: We give thanks to you, God. We give thanks, for your Name is near. Men tell about your wondrous works.

Then God himself speaks. When I choose the appointed time, I will judge blamelessly. Even when the earth trembles, God holds its pillars firm. He warns the arrogant not to boast and the wicked not to lift up their horn, a picture of strength and pride.

The psalm teaches where real success comes from. Not from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south, comes exaltation. But God is the judge. He puts down one, and lifts up another. God's justice is pictured as a cup the wicked must drink. Asaph promises to declare this forever.

Exaltation Comes from God

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 75 says it is a Psalm by Asaph, a song, set to the tune Do Not Destroy. It is a dialogue. The community begins with thanks because God's Name is near, meaning his presence and reputation are close at hand. Then God speaks in the first person: When I choose the appointed time, I will judge blamelessly. The earth and all its inhabitants quake. I firmly hold its pillars.

God's words are a warning to pride. Don't boast; don't lift up the horn. In the Bible, a horn often stands for power and status, like the horns of a strong animal. The psalm insists that exaltation does not come from the east, west or south. Power is not gained by geography, wealth or alliances. God is the judge. He puts down one, and lifts up another.

The poem uses the image of a cup of foaming wine in Yahweh's hand, which the wicked of the earth must drink to its dregs. It is a picture of judgment that cannot be avoided. The psalm closes with the singer's promise to declare and sing praises to the God of Jacob, and with God's word that the horns of the wicked will be cut off while the horns of the righteous are lifted up.

Show What You Know

  1. What does it mean that God's Name is near?

  2. What does a horn stand for in the Bible?

  3. What does the psalm say power does not come from?

  4. What does the cup in Yahweh's hand picture?
