The title of Psalm 74 calls it a contemplation by Asaph. Enemies had come into God's sanctuary and burned it. The people asked, God, why have you rejected us forever? They said, Remember your congregation.

Then they remembered who God is. Yet God is my King of old, working salvation throughout the earth. He divided the sea by his strength.

The day is yours, the night is also yours. You have prepared the light and the sun. You made summer and winter. So they prayed, Arise, God! Don't forget your people. Let the poor and needy praise your name.

Psalms 74 · Grade 4

When God's House Is Burned

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 74 calls it a contemplation by Asaph. It is a lament, a sad song for a time when enemies had destroyed God's sanctuary. They roared in the meeting place, smashed its carved work with axes, and burned it to the ground. The people asked, God, why have you rejected us forever? There were no more signs and no prophet to say how long.

In the middle of the sadness, the singer turns to who God is. Yet God is my King of old, working salvation throughout the earth. God divided the sea by his strength and made springs and streams. The day is yours, the night is also yours. You have set all the boundaries of the earth. You have made summer and winter.

The psalm ends with prayer. Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh. Don't forget the life of your poor forever. Let the poor and needy praise your name. Arise, God! Plead your own cause.

Psalms 74 · Grade 5

Yet God Is My King

Name Date

Read and Think

The title calls Psalm 74 a contemplation by Asaph. It mourns the ruin of God's sanctuary. Enemies smashed the carved work, set the sanctuary on fire and burned the meeting places of God in the land. Worst of all was the silence: We see no miraculous signs. There is no longer any prophet.

The turning point is the word Yet. Yet God is my King of old, working salvation throughout the earth. The singer recalls creation and the exodus in poetic language: God divided the sea, broke the heads of the sea monsters, and cut open springs and streams. In the ancient world, the sea and its monsters were pictures of chaos; the psalm declares that God is master over all of it.

The singer's argument is that the God who set the boundaries of the earth and made summer and winter is able to act now. So he prays boldly: Remember your covenant. Don't let the oppressed return ashamed. Let the poor and needy praise your name. Arise, God! Plead your own cause. Lament becomes a way of holding God to his own promises.

  1. What did the enemies do to the sanctuary?

  2. What was the worst part of the people's suffering?

  3. What did the sea and sea monsters picture in the ancient world?

  4. How does lament hold God to his promises?
