Psalms 74 · Grade 4
When God's House Is Burned
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 74 calls it a contemplation by Asaph. It is a lament, a sad song for a time when enemies had destroyed God's sanctuary. They roared in the meeting place, smashed its carved work with axes, and burned it to the ground. The people asked, God, why have you rejected us forever? There were no more signs and no prophet to say how long.
In the middle of the sadness, the singer turns to who God is. Yet God is my King of old, working salvation throughout the earth. God divided the sea by his strength and made springs and streams. The day is yours, the night is also yours. You have set all the boundaries of the earth. You have made summer and winter.
The psalm ends with prayer. Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh. Don't forget the life of your poor forever. Let the poor and needy praise your name. Arise, God! Plead your own cause.
