The wicked seemed to have no troubles. Asaph said, Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain. It was too painful to understand, until he entered God's sanctuary. Then he saw their end.

Asaph said to God, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand. You will guide me. My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. It is good for me to come close to God.

When the Wicked Seem to Win

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 73 calls it a Psalm by Asaph. It begins with a truth: Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But Asaph confesses he nearly fell: My feet were almost gone. For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They seemed healthy, proud and free of trouble.

Asaph even wondered whether keeping his heart pure had been for nothing. When I tried to understand this, it was too painful for me, until I entered God's sanctuary, and considered their latter end. In God's presence he saw that the success of the wicked does not last.

Then Asaph saw his own treasure. Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand. You will guide me with your counsel. Whom do I have in heaven? My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. It is good for me to come close to God.

Psalms 73 · Grade 5

Nevertheless, I Am With You

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 73 says it is by Asaph, and it opens Book III of the Psalms. It begins with a confession of faith, Surely God is good to Israel, and then admits how close Asaph came to losing it. Seeing the prosperity of the wicked, he envied them. They mocked God, yet their wealth increased. He concluded, Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain.

The turning point is verse 17: until I entered God's sanctuary, and considered their latter end. Worship changed his perspective. In God's presence he saw that the wicked stand on slippery places and that their success is like a dream that vanishes on waking. He also saw his own bitterness clearly and called himself senseless before God.

Then comes one of the great word of Psalm 73: Nevertheless. Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand. You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Asaph realizes that his greatest treasure is God himself: There is no one on earth whom I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Asaph conclude before his turning point?

  2. What changed Asaph's perspective?

  3. How does Asaph see the success of the wicked afterward?

  4. What does Asaph realize is his greatest treasure?
