A Lifetime of Trust

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 71 has no title, so it does not name its writer. The singer looks back over his whole life. You are my hope, Lord Yahweh, my confidence from my youth. I have relied on you from the womb. God has been with him from his very first day.

Now he is old and gray-haired, and his enemies whisper, God has forsaken him. The singer prays, Don't forsake me when my strength fails. Instead of giving up, he says, But I will always hope, and will add to all of your praise.

He has a job to finish. God, you have taught me from my youth. Even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don't forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation. He ends with music and joy, praising the Holy One of Israel with harp and lyre.

Psalms 71 · Grade 5

Declaring God to the Next Generation

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 71 has no title, and it does not name its writer. Its opening verses echo Psalm 31. The voice is that of an older believer: You are my hope, Lord Yahweh, my confidence from my youth. I have relied on you from the womb. God's faithfulness is the thread that runs through a whole life.

Age brings new fears. Don't reject me in my old age. Don't forsake me when my strength fails. Enemies see his weakness and conclude, God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him. The singer answers with a quiet decision: But I will always hope, and will add to all of your praise. He admits he does not know the full measure of God's salvation, but he will tell of it all day.

His deepest desire is to pass faith on. Even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don't forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come. The God who showed him bitter troubles will bring him up again. The psalm ends with harp and lyre and lips shouting for joy.

Show What You Know

  1. What runs like a thread through the singer's life?

  2. What conclusion do the enemies draw from his weakness?

  3. What does the singer admit about God's salvation?

  4. What is his deepest desire in old age?
