A Prayer in a Hurry

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 70 says it is by David and calls it a reminder. It is nearly the same as the end of Psalm 40. It is a prayer for emergencies, and it begins, Hurry, God, to deliver me, and ends, Yahweh, don't delay.

David's enemies seek his soul and mock him, saying, Aha! Aha! He asks God to turn them back in disgrace. But he also prays for God's people: Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. He wants God to be honored, not just himself rescued.

At the end David says plainly, But I am poor and needy. He has nothing to offer except his need. That is enough, because God is his help and his deliverer. Short prayers can be real prayers.

Psalms 70 · Grade 5

Yahweh, Don't Delay

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 70 says it is by David, for the Chief Musician, and calls it a reminder. It is almost word for word the same as Psalm 40:13-17, lifted out to stand alone as a prayer for urgent need. It begins, Hurry, God, to deliver me. Come quickly to help me, Yahweh, and ends, Yahweh, don't delay.

Between the two cries, David prays in two directions. He asks that those who seek his soul and mock him with Aha! Aha! be turned back in disgrace. He also prays that all who seek God would rejoice and keep saying, Let God be exalted! His deepest wish is not only his own rescue but that God would be honored among his people.

The final verse is honest about dependence: But I am poor and needy. Come to me quickly, God. You are my help and my deliverer. The psalm shows that God welcomes short, urgent prayers. The title calls it a reminder.
