Psalms 7 · Grade 5

The Pit and the Praise

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 7's title calls it a meditation by David, which he sang to Yahweh, concerning the words of Cush, the Benjamite. The title gives no further detail, so we should not guess who Cush was. The psalm opens with David taking refuge in Yahweh and asking for rescue from pursuers who would tear his soul like a lion.

Remarkably, David invites God to examine him. If there is iniquity in his hands, or if he has rewarded evil to him who was at peace with him, he says, let the enemy pursue him. He then calls on Yahweh to arise and to judge him according to his righteousness and integrity. The basis of his hope is God's character: the righteous God searches minds and hearts, and God is a righteous judge.

The second half pictures the wicked man. He sharpens his sword, strings his bow, and conceives mischief. Yet he digs a hole and falls into the pit which he made, and his violence comes down on his own head. Evil carries the seeds of its own defeat. David closes not with fear but with worship, giving thanks for God's righteousness and singing praise to the name of Yahweh Most High.
