Zeal for God's House

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 69 says it is by David, to the tune of Lilies. It opens with drowning: Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck! I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. David is weary with crying, and those who hate him without a cause are more than the hairs of his head.

Part of his suffering comes from loving God. For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. When he wept and fasted, people mocked him. Even so, David says, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, and he asks God to answer according to his loving kindness.

David asks God to deal with his enemies, leaving judgment in God's hands. Then the psalm ends with song: I will praise the name of God with a song. Yahweh hears the needy. In the New Testament, Jesus' disciples remembered verse 9 when he cleared the temple (John 2:17), and John says Jesus was offered vinegar on the cross (John 19:29), words that echo verse 21.

Psalms 69 · Grade 5

Suffering for God's Sake

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 69 says it is by David, to the tune of Lilies. It is one of the most quoted psalms in the New Testament. It opens with a man going under: Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck! He has no foothold, his throat is dry from crying, and his enemies hate him without a cause.

David admits his own foolishness, but much of his pain comes from faithfulness. Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. For the zeal of your house consumes me. He looked for comforters and found none, and in his thirst they gave him vinegar to drink. In the New Testament, the disciples remembered verse 9 when Jesus cleared the temple (John 2:17), Paul applied it to Christ (Romans 15:3), and John records that Jesus was given sour wine on the cross (John 19:29).

Verses 22 to 28 are some of the strongest prayers against enemies in the Psalms. David hands his enemies over to God rather than taking revenge himself, and Christians read them in light of Jesus, who prayed for those who crucified him (Luke 23:34). The psalm finishes in praise: Yahweh hears the needy, and doesn't despise his captive people. Let heaven and earth praise him.

Show What You Know

  1. What does David admit about himself?

  2. Name two New Testament uses of verse 9.

  3. How should the strong prayers in verses 22-28 be read?

  4. How does the psalm end?
