Psalms 68 · Grade 4

God on the March

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 68 calls it a Psalm by David, a song. It is a song of victory. It begins, Let God arise! Let his enemies be scattered! These words echo what Moses said whenever the ark set out in the wilderness. The psalm pictures God leading his people like a king on a march.

Along the way, God shows his heart. A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. He sets the lonely in families and brings out prisoners with singing. He sends plentiful rain and prepares his goodness for the poor.

The march ends at God's sanctuary on Mount Zion, with singers, musicians and girls playing tambourines. The psalm praises the Lord, who daily bears our burdens, and calls all the kingdoms of the earth to sing to God. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 18 about God ascending on high and giving gifts, and applies it to Jesus (Ephesians 4:8).

Psalms 68 · Grade 5

God Who Bears Our Burdens

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 68 calls it a Psalm by David, a song for the Chief Musician. It is one of the grandest psalms in the Psalter. It opens with words Moses spoke when the ark of the covenant set out (Numbers 10:35): Let God arise! Let his enemies be scattered! The psalm traces God's march from Sinai through the wilderness to his chosen mountain, Zion.

Woven through the march is God's care for the weak. He is a father of the fatherless and a defender of the widows. He sets the lonely in families and brings out the prisoners with singing. He prepares his goodness for the poor. The mighty God who makes the earth tremble at Sinai is the same God who notices the lonely child.

At Zion, God's procession enters the sanctuary with singers and tambourines, and kings bring gifts. Verse 18 says, You have ascended on high. You have led away captives. In the New Testament, Paul applies this to Jesus, who ascended and gave gifts to his people (Ephesians 4:8). The psalm's gentle center is verse 19: Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burdens.

Show What You Know

  1. Where do the opening words come from?

  2. What contrast does the psalm draw about God?

  3. How does the New Testament apply verse 18?

  4. What is the gentle center of the psalm?
