Why does the song ask for blessing? So that God's way may be known on earth, and his salvation among all nations. Then the song says, Let all the peoples praise you.

Psalms 67 · Grade 4

Blessed to Be a Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 67 is a Psalm and a song for stringed instruments. Its first line echoes the blessing priests spoke over Israel in Numbers 6: May God be merciful to us, bless us, and cause his face to shine on us. A shining face is a picture of a smile, showing favor and kindness.

But the blessing has a purpose beyond Israel: That your way may be known on earth, and your salvation among all nations. God blesses his people so the whole world can see what he is like.

Twice the psalm says, Let the peoples praise you, God. Let all the peoples praise you. The nations are glad, because God judges them with equity and governs them. The harvest is in, and God will bless us, so that all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Psalms 67 · Grade 5

That All Nations May Know

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 67 is only seven verses long, but it holds a big vision. It begins with words close to the priestly blessing of Numbers 6: May God be merciful to us, bless us, and cause his face to shine on us. God's shining face pictures his warm favor turned toward his people.

Verse 2 gives the reason for the request: That your way may be known on earth, and your salvation among all nations. Blessing is not a private treasure. God's people are blessed so that the nations will see God's way and his salvation. This echoes God's promise to Abraham that all the families of the earth would be blessed through him.

The psalm is built around a refrain: Let the peoples praise you, God. Let all the peoples praise you. At its center, the nations are glad and sing for joy because God judges them with equity. The harvest in verse 6 becomes a sign of greater blessing to come, until all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Show What You Know

  1. What does God's shining face picture?

  2. Why is blessing not a private treasure?

  3. What promise to Abraham does the psalm echo?

  4. What is the harvest a sign of?
