God tested his people. He refined them as silver is refined. They went through fire and through water. But God brought them to a place of abundance.

Psalms 66 · Grade 4

Tested and Brought Through

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 66 is a song and a Psalm. The title does not name its author. It starts with the whole earth: Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! Then it invites everyone, Come, and see God's deeds. He turned the sea into dry land, remembering how Israel crossed the Red Sea and the Jordan River on foot.

Next the psalm talks about hard times. You, God, have tested us. You have refined us, as silver is refined. Silver is heated in fire so the impurities can be removed. God's people went through fire and through water, but he brought them to the place of abundance.

Finally one person speaks. Come and hear, all you who fear God. I will declare what he has done for my soul. The singer had made promises in distress and now keeps them. He says, If I cherished sin in my heart, the Lord wouldn't have listened. But God has listened and has not turned away his loving kindness.

  1. What river and sea crossings does verse 6 remember?

  2. Why is silver heated in fire?

  3. What does the singer do with promises made in distress?

Psalms 66 · Grade 5

Come and Hear

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 66, a song and a Psalm for the Chief Musician, does not name its author. It moves from the whole world to one person. It opens with a universal call: Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! All the earth will worship you. Then it invites the nations to look at history: Come, and see God's deeds. He turned the sea into dry land. They went through the river on foot.

The middle section reinterprets suffering. You have refined us, as silver is refined. You brought us into prison. You laid a burden on our backs. We went through fire and through water, but you brought us to the place of abundance. The hardships were real, but they were not pointless. Like a refiner, God used them to purify his people.

In the last section a single worshiper speaks. He brings offerings to pay the vows his lips promised when he was in distress. He also tells his testimony: Come and hear, all you who fear God. I will declare what he has done for my soul. Honest about sin, he notes that cherished sin would block prayer, but God has listened. Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor his loving kindness from me.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the psalm move from the world to one person?

  2. How does the refining picture change the meaning of hardship?

  3. What vows does the worshiper pay?

  4. What two things has God not turned away?
