God of the Harvest

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 65 calls it a Psalm by David, a song for the Chief Musician. It begins in Zion, where praise waits for God. God hears prayer, so all people will come to him. Though sins overwhelmed the singer, God atoned for their transgressions. Blessed is the one God brings near to live in his courts.

The psalm widens to the whole world. God answers with awesome deeds of righteousness and is the hope of all the ends of the earth. By his power he forms the mountains and stills the roaring seas and the turmoil of the nations. He calls the morning's dawn and the evening with songs of joy.

Finally, God is the farmer of the world. He visits the earth and waters it. He drenches its furrows, levels its ridges and softens it with showers. You crown the year with your bounty. The wilderness, hills, pastures and valleys are pictured as clothed with gladness, and they shout for joy and sing.

Crowned with Bounty

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 65 calls it a Psalm by David, a song. The psalm moves outward in three circles. It begins in God's house. Praise waits for you, God, in Zion. God is the one who hears prayer, and he deals with the deepest human problem: Sins overwhelmed me, but you atoned for our transgressions. Blessed is the one whom you choose and cause to come near.

The second circle is the whole earth. God is the hope of all the ends of the earth, even of those far away on the sea. He forms the mountains and stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. The same power that calms the sea calms the restless peoples of the world.

The third circle is the farmland. God visits the earth and waters it, drenching its furrows and softening it with showers. You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance. Hills, pastures and valleys are personified as dressed in gladness and singing. The God who forgives sin is also the God who sends rain.
