Psalms 63 · Grade 5
Better Than Life
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 63 places David in the desert of Judah. Whether he was fleeing Saul or Absalom, the title does not say. What it does give is a vivid setting: a dry and weary land, where there is no water. David's physical thirst becomes a picture of his soul: God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you.
David draws on memory. He has seen God's power and glory in the sanctuary. That memory leads to one of the strongest statements in the Psalms: Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you. If God's love is worth more than life, then nothing can take away David's reason to praise. His soul is satisfied as with the richest food, even in a place with no food or water.
David's devotion continues through the night watches as he remembers God on his bed. The psalm describes a two-way grip: My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up. David clings to God, but God's hand is what truly holds him. The psalm ends with confidence that the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced and the king shall rejoice in God.
