Psalms 63 · Grade 4
A Dry and Weary Land
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 63 calls it a Psalm by David. The title says he wrote it when he was in the desert of Judah. In that dry and weary land, where there is no water, David uses his thirst as a picture of his longing: God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you.
David remembers seeing God's power and glory in the sanctuary, and he makes a bold claim: Your loving kindness is better than life. Being loved by God matters more to him than life itself. So he will bless God while he lives and lift up his hands in God's name, and his soul will be satisfied as with the richest food.
Even at night David remembers God on his bed. He rejoices in the shadow of God's wings. My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up. David trusts that those who seek to destroy him will fail, and he says the king shall rejoice in God.
