God Alone Is My Rock

Read the Story

The title of Psalm 62 calls it a Psalm by David. He says, My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. I will never be greatly shaken.

Some people wanted to throw David down. They said nice words but cursed inside. David told his soul to wait in silence for God alone.

Then David spoke to all the people. Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Power belongs to God, and loving kindness too.

Memory Verse

“Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.”

Waiting in Silence

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 62 calls it a Psalm by David, and the title adds, To Jeduthun. Its key word is alone: My soul rests in God alone. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. David is under attack by people who want to throw him down like a leaning wall. They bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly.

David speaks to his own soul: My soul, wait in silence for God alone. Then he turns to everyone: Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us.

David warns against trusting the wrong things. People of low and high degree are just a breath. Don't trust in oppression or robbery, and if riches increase, don't set your heart on them. God has spoken: power belongs to God, and to him belongs loving kindness.

Psalms 62 · Grade 5

Power and Loving Kindness

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 62 says, To Jeduthun. A Psalm by David. The psalm repeats one small word: alone. My soul rests in God alone. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. David is under pressure from people who want to topple him like a leaning wall or a tottering fence, and who bless with their mouth but curse inwardly.

Twice David uses nearly the same words, first as a statement and then as a command to himself: My soul, wait in silence for God alone. Resting in God is not passive; it is a choice repeated in the face of danger. Then he invites the whole community: Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us.

David weighs the alternatives. On the scales, both humble and powerful people are lighter than a breath. Oppression, robbery and growing riches are all poor places to rest a heart. The psalm ends with two truths God has spoken: power belongs to God, and to the Lord belongs loving kindness. Because God is both strong and loving, he can be trusted completely.

Show What You Know

  1. How does David describe his attackers?

  2. Why does David repeat his words about resting in God?

  3. What does the picture of the scales show?

  4. Why do the two final truths matter together?
