Psalms 59 · Grade 5
Morning Song After a Dark Night
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 59 places it on the night when Saul sent men to watch David's house to kill him. In 1 Samuel 19, Michal helped David escape through a window. In the psalm, David prays, Deliver me from my enemies, my God, and insists he is innocent: not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Yahweh.
The psalm has two refrains. One describes the enemies: they return at evening, howling like dogs, and prowl around the city. The other describes God: Oh, my Strength, I watch for you, for God is my high tower. A high tower is a lookout place too high for enemies to reach. While others watch to destroy David, David watches for God.
David's requests are strong but thoughtful. He asks, Don't kill them, or my people may forget. He wants God's justice to be seen and remembered, and to make known that God rules in Jacob. The night of howling ends in morning song: I will sing aloud of your loving kindness in the morning. To you, my strength, I will sing praises. For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.
