Psalms 54 · Grade 4

Behold, God Is My Helper

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 54 calls it a contemplation by David. It is a short psalm. The title says the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Isn't David hiding himself among us? David was being hunted by the king, and people he hoped would protect him gave him away.

David cries, Save me, God, by your name. Violent men had sought after his soul, and they had not set God before them. Then David speaks with confidence: Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul. He trusts God to deal with his enemies in his truth.

The psalm ends in thanks. David says he will sacrifice a free will offering, given gladly and not because he must. He will give thanks to Yahweh's name, for it is good. He speaks as if God has already delivered him out of all trouble.
